FLASH: First fight in on the Mayweather card, and an interesting decision...

Well, we've already got one possible precursor to bullshit in Las Vegas tonight:

Yes, the right guy won this first fight.  Welterweights Pablo Cesar Cano and Ashley Theophane were the first of three undercard matches.  This was scheduled and went the distance of 10 rounds.

Cano was seen by most observers to have won the fight handily.

Well, he DID win the fight.

But only a split decision:  He got scores of 98-92 and 97-93 (that's 8 rounds to 2 and 7 rounds to 3) to win the split decision.

The third judge, however, somehow scored this 96-94 (6 rounds to 4) for Theophane.

If this ends up not a precursor to anything, I will stand (or sit) corrected.  But I'm going to put this up just a few minutes after that decision was announced, just in case...

Cano goes to 27-3-1 with 19 KOs.  Theophane is 33-6-1 with 9 KOs.  Both have significant ties to Mayweather.

(UPDATE 8 PM PDT:  Two for two!!!  Again, right guy won the fight, but this judging is getting real interesting...

IBF Junior Middleweight Title Bout between two guys who can't knock anybody out.  Absolute snoozer of an ugly fight that the MGM Grand Garden Arena basically stopped watching after about three rounds.

Sounds like one of the judges did too!  Ishe Smith was the champion, but is not anymore.  Carlos Molina used ring generalship to win a boring fight by another split decision.  He got 117-111 and 116-112 (9 rounds to 3, 8 rounds to 4).  Smith, somehow, got a 116-112 (8-4) in his favor!!

Molina, 22-5-2 with only 6 knockouts.  Smith, 25-6, 11 KOs.

I don't have a very good feeling if I'm Alvarez right now...

UPDATE at the bell for the Main Event:  Now I REALLY don't have a good feeling.  One of the three judges is C. J. Ross.  He was one of the two who gave Timothy Bradley that controversial screwjob decision over Manny Pacquiao to ensure Mayweather-Pacquiao never happens.)
