We knew it was coming -- and I believe it's one of the reasons that Oakland has completely sabotaged their season.
But, today, the city of Oakland filed the lawsuit which, if the owner follows through with his threat, will mean they play... somewhere else... in 2019. (San Diego, the UNLV college stadium, and even the University of Nevada at RENO are considered options...)
If it wins (seeking many millions in lost revenue and punitive damages), the team Las Vegas gets won't be the Raiders.
Here we go....
Good luck to them trying to take the name Raiders from the football club. The city of Oakland was dumb enough to bring the Raiders back in 1995 with improvements to the coliseum. There is still 80 million dollars due on those bonds issued 23 years ago.
ReplyDeleteAnd that money is probably what they are suing for, #1.
ReplyDeleteAs for the Raiders name: I read, back in September, that there was a possible avenue that, should the city of Oakland win the lawsuit, the NFL cannot make the team the Las Vegas Raiders. They would have to find another name.
I don't think they'll get the name, maybe monetary damages but the name belongs to the Raiders who along with 29 other teams make up a corporation called the National Football League. Is the NFL a cartel? You bet it is.Is the product still represented in the Bay area when the Raiders move?Yes again. The 49ers have taken full advantage of the market since the Raiders first moved in 1981.
