First, I'll do just the week, then I'll show you how this stacks up against history:
- Week 6 points per game: 50.
- Six-week average: 48.24
- Home teams 9-5 for 60-30-2. (About .660)
- Over was 8-6-1 for 49-42-2. Both a 58 and a 59.5 went over the number.
- 7-8 against the spread, 11-4 straight up last week. 41-50-2 ATS, 60-31-2 SU.
- Team with more penalties: 9-6 for the week, 35-44 for the year.
- 5 Cliffhangers, eight total within 8 points. 6 non-competitive games, 7 last chance misses.
- Of 93 games so far played, 52 have finished within eight points, 22 Cliffhangers.
Couple of other notes:
- The Quarterback Rules have rigged another game, a key one to determine who plays Super Bowl LIII(E). Kansas City's Breeland Speeks said he was forced to let Tom Brady go and let him score a go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter of Sunday night's game, fearing a 15 yard-penalty and fine if he did not.
- The NFL is looking into THREE Vontaze Burfict hits, as the Pittsburgh Steelers are demanding Burfict's FIFTH suspension (and fourth for on-field conduct) for hits like elbowing Antonio Brown in the head while he was unprotected.
- Ben Roethlesberger stated Burfict, after he put Brown out a while, said he'd do to the same to JuJu Smith-Schuster, backing up Smith-Schuster's claims from Sunday. As of 5 PM Eastern Tuesday, no word from the NFL on Supplemental Discipline. Word is that no suspension is forthcoming. The rematch is Week 17.
- And a gem from Brian Tuohy on how the Sports Machine works together:
It's kind of amazing the the Packers INT and Rodgers drive with 1:07 left all happened immediately after ESPN announced the Brewers won. Timing is everything, no?— Brian Tuohy (@TheFixIsInTuohy) October 16, 2018
Ratings, from Sports Media Watch:
- Sunday night's shootout showdown with KC and New England was up 34% from last year's Week 6 SNF, highest week 6 SNF on record, a 14.6 -- tied with 2015, another Patriots feature.
- The Cowboys highlighted the lone dud on Sunday, a national window of 12.0 (down 14%).
- Singleheader on FOX was 11.7 (up 18%).
- The regional games drew 9.0 (up 9%).
And now for historical perspective on the scoring ridiculousness, with help from Pro Football Reference.
- The record scoring year for football entering this season was 2013. The 46.707 points per game that year was a total of 11,957 points. Prorating that to a total of 93 games (which is how many games have been played this year so far) comes out to 4,344 points.
- I made an error back in 2013. There was one year with a higher per-game average than 2013's 46.707 -- but you'd have to go back to when the NFL had only ten teams in 1948 for a 47.2.
- This year, so far, there have been 4,486 points scored. That's 142 points more than the prorated I just stated above.
- According to Pro Football Reference, there have been an average of 3.52 passing/receiving touchdowns a game (1.76 per team). That is an NFL record by a quarter of a passing touchdown a game!
And, with the early lines mostly out for Week 7:
- The Rams and San Francisco are totalled at 53.
- Cincinnati-Kansas City is right now at 58.5 for Sunday night.
- And the Giants and Atlanta are at 54.5
