Someone is looking for a new job today because he does not understand the realities of sport. (Deadspin)
Terry Frei was fired from the Denver Post after the Indy 500 for the following Tweet:
No problems with the firing whatsoever.
Here's the thing: People need to understand that Indy racing has been next to dead for quite a number of years now. Not only that, but many foreign drivers have done quite well at the Brickyard.
- Only four times since the turn of the millenium has an American driver won the Indy 500, according to Wikipedia.
- Helio Castreneves was won it three times.
- So has Dario Franchitti.
- Dan Wheldon, twice.
- Also Juan Pablo Montoya.
But, as one reader has already pointed out, it appears as if Frei doubles down on it, frankly calling Sato a slanty-eyed Jap who can't see because of the shape of his eyes.
(Immediate apologies to any Japanese who read this -- this is simply to demonstrate why the firing was done so quickly!!)
Often, Japanese are profiled as sneaky or conniving or can't see or whatever.
The fact is that the Japanese are rising through the ranks of a number of sports (along with other southeast-Asian counterparts).
Good luck finding another career, asshole.
And now the elephant in the sports media room today.
Another step into the abyss happened today when the biggest story in sports is that Tiger Woods (the patron saint of corporate golf) was arrested this morning for DUI.
I am really getting the impression that Woods is losing his grip. Knowing his career is over and that he has failed to break Jack's record for majors, Woods is being forced to confront the fact that, with all the money in the world, he has failed in his life's ambition, even with the entire sport and it's entire media riding him.
My golf-fan friend said it best: Apologies to Jack Nicklaus, because no one's going to care about your home tournament this weekend!
