Wild Card Thoughts

  • Really looking Chargers-Saints now.  Knew that when Luck's run continued over Houston, Chicago was going to follow them out.
  • NFL really working it out, other than the Andrew Luck continuance -- all three other games within one score, one a single point and one for two.
  • Last Chance Miss for Seattle in Dallas.  Don't completely count out Dallas -- the one team which the ratings held because of a lot of the "America's Team" and Jones talking pro-Trump.
  • 25 fourth-quarter points in Baltimore.  And another Last Chance Miss.
  • And a Cliffhanger and a Last Chance Miss in Philly's win over Chicago.
So, with the division champions and home teams going 1-3, we have:

AFC:

Kansas City vs. Indianapolis

It'd be a heck of a way to put KC out if they are going to be Kareem Hunt-ed, but I think the better draw is KC-Chargers.

New England vs. LA Chargers

This shouldn't even remotely be close for a New England win.  I think Goodell has other ideas.

NFC:

New Orleans vs. Philadelphia

LA Rams vs. Dallas

A "POINTS!!!" championship weekend with KC/Chargers and Rams/New Orleans???

  1. Were You not entertained? The Cowboys/Rams is a TV matchup for the ages.I think Andrew's luck will run out Saturday but think the other 3 road warriors will move on.Could not of scripted the Eagles/Bears game any better.

    1. I do think it has to run out for Luck to prevent LA from hosting the AFC title game, if that's what you're saying.

Cowboys/Rams is a great TV matchup -- I just don't see how Dallas can prevent a Rams/Saints rematch...

  2. Philly 2.0 is a narrative I don't think the league can pass up.Or Dallas for that matter.Wonder if there are magnets inside the goalposts to direct and attract the football.

    1. Somebody else is reading Brian Tuohy -- it's been one of his main theories this season.

Dallas would make more sense than Philly for the simple reason that there is so much Dallas merch out there, and the fact that Jerry Jones is more politically aligned with the money in the league, rather than many of the players or fans.

I still think that the LA market is so soft, the league is going to have to do the unthinkable to make a square peg go into a round hole.

  3. I'm questioning Jim irsay's actions as reason to further penalize the Colts. and there is quite a bit of Buzz about how KC can't get past this round. There is enough money on Indianapolis to take the Chiefs today. Although the Kareem hunt issue looms over their head people do forget quickly enough, thus I think Kansas City moves on today

    1. The San Diego player is correct: The league is trying to prevent the Chargers from hosting a playoff game -- and why wouldn't they?

Would you want the 2018-19 AFC Championship Game to be held in a 27,000 seat soccer stadium?

I still think the Chargers win the Super Bowl (largely to forcibly jump-start this team with bandwagon fans before the New LA Showtime (next year's Rams) runs over everybody...) this year, but there's no way that can happen, and that's why KC won.

  4. I'm beginning to think that Drew Brees with all his records will fall in the footsteps of Peyton Manning and Tom Brady after their record-breaking seasons and lose miserably. Possibly in the cinference championship. The Philadelphia story line is simply not that exciting. The only thing game from the Philadelphia story line is the hype of whatever team Nick Foles will be on next year. Is that enough to have Philly beat New Orleans? I don't think so

    1. I don't think it's Philly. Now, Rams are only up 8 in the fourth quarter, but I would the winner of the game in progress (Rams-Cowboys) would be far more attractive to the league than having the Eagles repeat.

That said, I do think the league, as an It's All About the Quarterback, would like to give at least some rub to Drew Brees -- and, as I've said before, is he going to have enough in the tank by the time the LA Experiment hits full stride?

  5. Concerned most about Dallaa upsetting someone. Is it his time? Has Jerry Jones gotten over his hump from the last 25 years? I almost feel that if Dallas is advances today and loses next week they're off-season will attract a lot of eyes. There will probably be more preseason hype for Dallas if they lose then if they win the Super Bowl. And that hype is worth so much to the league. Early ratings and early storylines go a long way into the season

    1. If not for the entire LA experiment -- and I do think a Drew Brees "One for the Road" push -- I think you'd be right.

This is the first year in about four where the Dallas Cowboys have not been in the league doghouse for Greg Hardy this, Ezekiel Elliot that, drug suspensions the other...

I think the league really would like to give Jones one for his agreeing with the White political realities of the league. I just think there's no room for them at the inn this year.
